Following the Equator is a non-fiction travelogue, chronicling Twain’s journey to Fiji, New Zealand, Australia, India, and South Africa. Twain wrote the book during his lecture tour of the British Empire, between 1895 and 1896. It combines vivid descriptions of the landscapes and cultures he encountered and is peppered with anecdotes, satire, and Twain’s reflections on colonialism and human nature. “The one thing you can always say about Twain is that he is no ordinary tourist. His picture of the odd customs of the British Indian empire - both native and colonial - are seemingly endless but always fascinating” (Rubin, 2010).
