Rear admiral Richard E. Byrd (1888-1957) was an American naval officer and recipient of the United States Medal of Honor. Byrd was also known as a pioneering American aviator, polar explorer, and organizer of polar logistics. Alone is an autobiographical tale of Byrd's second expedition to Antarctica, after he had already piloted the first flights over the North and South Poles. Staying alone for six months at the bottom of the world, Byrd aimed to study the meteorological conditions of Antarctica's winter. Isolated in the polar night with no hope of release until spring, Byrd began suffering inexplicable symptoms of mental and physical illness. By the time he discovered that carbon monoxide from a defective stovepipe was poisoning him, Byrd was already engaged in a monumental struggle to save his life and preserve his sanity. This book of Byrd's near death experiences and dangerous encounters captivated audiences immediately upon its first release in 1938.
