Ann Hand "The US Capitol Circa 1866" Silk Scarf
This is a coveted, patriotic silk scarf, issued by American designer Ann Hand. The silk scarf was issued in a light blue and gold colorway. At center is an artistic interpretation of “The United States Capitol, Circa 1866.” The scene depicts the Capitol with its new dome, construction of which was finally finished in 1866. The iconic neoclassical building is set in a golden border of oak leaves and fruits, and surmounted by a glorious spreadwing eagle, with the US shield clutched in its talons. This is encircled by five blue and gold dotted rings, mimicking the coffers in the Capitol rotunda. At each corner is an encircled illustration of Thomas Crawford’s iconic bronze “Statue of Freedom,” which sits atop the dome of the U.S. Capitol. At each side are two gold cherubs holding up a red, white, and blue patriotic shield.
Plans began in May 1854 to build a new cast-iron dome for the United States Capitol. The then-architect of the Capitol Thomas Walter and his team were sold on the aesthetics of a new dome, as well as the utility of a fire-proof one. A year later, on March 3, 1855, President Franklin Pierce signed off on the appropriation of $100,000 to build the dome. Construction began in September of that year with the removal of the first dome raised by Charles Bulfinch.
Over the next 11 years, the dome rose over the nation's capital. By December of 1863, Walter was able to set his colossal Statue of Freedom, atop the dome. Crawford created the allegorical statue as a symbol of “freedom triumphant– in war and peace.” The statue is an amalgam of early Roman and Native American symbolism.
In 1865, Thomas Walter resigned and his replacement, Edward Clark, assumed the role of finishing the last aspects of the dome. Just over a month later, in January 1866, Constantino Brumidi, who had been hired to paint a fresco above the interior dome's oculus, removed the scaffolding used during his work on the Apotheosis of Washington.
