"Culzean Castle. President Eisenhower's Scottish Home" British Railways Poster by Kenneth Steel, circa 1950s
Offered is a poster for the British Railways by Kenneth Steel. The poster advertises "Culzean Castle: President Eisenhower's Scottish Home" and encourages onlookers to "See Scotland by Train." The work dates to the 1950s and features a painterly depiction of the Culzean Castle and seaside. The work was published out of Norwich by Jarrold & Sons Ltd.
This travel poster advertises the British Railways. Rather than featuring an image of a train, the work advertises the destination where travelers could visit with a train ticket. The work includes the artist's signature in the stone, visible in white at the bottom of the image composition. It also incorporates the apparent sense of impasto, or textured layered paint, in the work.
Kenneth Steel was a famous British painter and etcher, noted for his works of art in watercolor. His strengths in paint are depicted here in this poster. An accomplished artist, Steel's works were praised for their accurate details and were later produced for railway signs and large advertisement posters. He was especially well known for his landscape scenes, which drew British Railways to use his work for their poster ads.
