Malcolm Scott Carpenter (1925- 2013) was an American naval officer, aviator, aeronautical engineer, aquanaut, and astronaut. He was one of the Mercury Seven astronauts selected for NASA’s Project Mercury in April of 1959. Carpenter was the second American, after John Glenn, to orbit the Earth and the fourth American in space. This book serves as his personal memoir and discusses his experience in the Mercury Seven program.
During the early years of the space program, each mission helped determine NASA's progress. Carpenter was backup to Glenn during the Mercury Atlas 6 orbital mission. He flew the next mission, Mercury Atlas 7, in the spacecraft he named Aurora 7. What was ultimately found to be a glitch in Aurora 7's pitch horizon scanner forced the astronaut to overshoot his expected landing site by 250 miles, resulting in a dangerous and chaotic mission.
In For Spacious Skies, Carpenter and his daughter, Kris Stoever, clear up all lingering questions about his Mercury flight and expound upon the history of our amazing national space expedition and program.
