George Washington Portrait in Wooden Porthole Frame, Mid 19th Century

Sale price$750.00

This is a small round portrait of George Washington, in a period wooden porthole frame. The portrait is undated but most likely from the mid to late 19th century.  The portrait depicts George Washington in three quarters pose, wearing a deep red overcoat, dark navy waistcoat, and white cravat. The portrait is based on a very rare, finely painted porcelain portrait of George Washington by French artist Jean Auguste Edouard Lienard, completed in the first half of the 19th century.

A student of Jean-Baptiste Regnault, Jean-Baptiste Isabey and Jacques-Louis David, Jean Auguste Edouard Lienard (1779-1848) worked as a painter of miniatures and portraits in Lille, France. In 1823, he was appointed as professor at the École des beaux-arts de Lille. He also worked for the Manufacture nationale de Sèvres,  one of the principal European porcelain factories, from 1828 to 1833.
