Specifically, he delves into the division of the flag into a canton and field, the design of the field, and the design of the canton. Howard Chapin argues that "of course the motives were not new artistically, but this particular combination of them was new and produced a flag of remarkable distinctive character." Much of the content of this book was first published in an article by Chapin in the June 9, 1929 printing of The Providence Sunday Journal Magazine.
