The Boys of ‘76 is an illustrated history of the American Revolution. The book was published on January 1, 1876, the first day of our nation’s centennial celebration. In the preface, Coffin proclaims it is "an attempt... to give a concise and authentic narrative of the principal battles of the Revolution as witnessed by those who took part in them." Written for school children, the book is richly illustrated with black and white engravings. A very popular and successful title, The Boys of ‘76 was republished many times.
Charles Carleton Coffin was an American journalist, author and politician. In 1854 Coffin worked for The Boston Journal. He later worked for The Boston Atlas before returning to work for the Boston Journal in 1858. Coffin wrote a number of historical works, including biographies of James Garfield and Abraham Lincoln, as well as a similarly titled The Boys of '61 which tells the story of the Civil War.
