Presented is a first edition printing of The James Bond Dossier by Kingsley Amis. This was one of the first formal literary studies of James Bond as a character, as well as the first analysis of Fleming’s writing style and techniques. The book was published by Jonathan Cape in London, in 1965. It is presented here in the publisher’s original black cloth boards, blind embossed with circles on the front and titled in gilt on the spine. The book retains its original pictorial dust jacket and is presented with a new archival ¼ leather and cloth clamshell case.

In 1963, Kingsley Amis, a novelist, teacher, and literary critic, first set out to write a short essay analyzing Ian Fleming’s James Bond works. With research and many drafts, this essay expanded into a full length non-fiction book. The James Bond Dossier was published on May 27, 1965, one month after the release of Fleming’s first posthumous novel, The Man with the Golden Gun, and one year prior to the release of the final Bond short story collection Octopussy and The Living Daylights

The James Bond Dossier explores most of the Bond fiction cycle, with the exception of Octopussy and The Living Daylights. Amis argues that the Bond books are not just part of pop culture, but rather substantial, complex works of fiction, worthy of study and analysis. Kinsley Amis was later commissioned to write Colonel Sun (1968), the first James Bond continuation novel, published under the pseudonym of Robert Markham.
