Theodore Roosevelt Portrait by William Edgar Marshall, 1904
Presented is a handsome portrait of Theodore Roosevelt by American artist William Edgar Marshall. A head and shoulders portrait, Roosevelt is captured wearing a suit, polka dotted tie, and glasses. The print was published in 1904 by Oscar Marshall, New York.
William Edgar Marshall was born in New York, in June of 1837. He worked first in bank engraving, before turning to larger plates. Marshall made a name for himself painting portraits in Boston, with many famous sitters, including Oliver Wendell Holmes. He traveled abroad in 1864, and remained in Europe about two years, living mostly in Paris and exhibiting in the salons of 1865-66. On his return he began to engrave again, chiefly portraits.
Marshall is best known for his portrait engravings; his portraits of George Washington (1862), Abraham Lincoln (1866), and Ulysses S. Grant (1868) were especially successful. He made six portraits of General Grant, the last one printed just before the general's death. Among others whose portraits he engraved were Henry W. Longfellow, James G. Blaine. Winfield S. Hancock, James A. Garfield, Theodore Roosevelt, Henry Ward Beecher, and James Fenimore Cooper. Most of his engravings were after paintings or sketches by himself.
In 1871, Marshall was commissioned to engrave “Head of Christ,” after Da Vinci, for Henry Ward Beecher's "Life of Jesus." This project inspired his own, larger engraving of the same subject, published in 1880.
