U.S. Navy Mark I Deck Clock, circa 1940s

This is an antique US Navy Mark I deck clock, from the mid-1940s. The clock is mounted on a swooped wooden base. The clock's face has a black dial with white Arabic numerals. The face is marked with "Mark I Deck Clock U.S. Navy" and the maker's name at the bottom, "Chelsea."  The serial number etched on the back "482243" dates the clock's manufacture to 1945-1949. 

Founded in 1897, Chelsea Clock Company is one of the oldest, and largest clock manufacturers in the United States. They began by selling marine and regulator clocks, and quickly expanded to mantelpiece clocks, ship bells, and aviation clocks. For over a century, Chelsea’s craftsmen have been designing and meticulously building some of the world’s most exquisite time machines. They are one of the biggest clock suppliers to the U.S. Navy. Advertised as the "timekeeper of the sea" Chelsea Deck Clocks were used to synchronize fleets. Today, the company continues to manufacture and repair clocks at its corporate headquarters in Chelsea, Massachusetts.

CONDITION:

In good condition. Black dial with white Arabic numerals. Black bakelite case. Mounted on a wooden base. Clock is currently working, although missing key to wind. Previously restored to remove smoke damage. Serial number etched on the back "482243". Face diameter 5.5" (exclusive of bezel). Height on base 10.5". Width 16.5". Depth 6.5".
