Vintage Paul Revere's Midnight Ride Bookends by S.C.C., 1974
Presented is a pair of brass bookends, depicting Paul Revere and his revolutionary midnight ride. The bookends show Revere, mounted on horseback, with a tricorner hat and one hand outstretched, holding a lantern. Paul Revere is one of the most iconic heroes of the American Revolution, later immortalized by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow in his 1860 poem, Paul Revere’s Ride. These attractive bookends were crafted by S.C.C. in 1974.
On April 18, 1775, Paul Revere and William Dawes set out on horseback from Boston to warn fellow patriots and the Massachusetts Provincial Congress that the British Army was mobilizing. Revolutionaries got word that the British forces planned to arrest Sons of Liberty leaders Samuel Adams and John Hancock in nearby Lexington, and then continue on to seize and destroy supplies and munitions in Concord.
Revere left Boston by rowing across the river to Charlestown, where he narrowly avoided capture. Revere changed his planned route and rode through Medford, where he informed Isaac Hall, the captain of the local militia, of the British plans. He then alerted almost all the houses from Medford through Menotomy, and arrived in Lexington sometime after midnight to deliver the news to Adams and Hancock. William Dawes, who had traveled the longer land route out of Boston, arrived in Lexington shortly after carrying the same message as Revere.
Dawes and Revere decided to continue on to Concord, Massachusetts, to verify that the military stores were properly dispersed and hidden away. A short distance outside of Lexington, they were joined by Dr. Samuel Prescott, a fellow “high Son of Liberty.” Not soon after, a British patrol intercepted all three men. Prescott and Dawes escaped; Revere was held for some time, questioned, and let go.
