Vintage "Spirit of '76" Bookends by Verona, circa 1925

Sale price$395.00

Offered is a set of vintage brass Revolutionary War soldiers bookends. Each bookend depicts a fife player and two drummers, marching in step together across a grassy field. In the background, a large 13-star medallion flag waves in the air. These patriotic bookends were made circa 1925 by the manufacturer Verona.

During the American Revolution, the Continental Army used fifes and drums for communication and regimentation. Music, standardized by the drillmaster, served as a signal in battle. The higher pitch of the fife and the booming beat and tap of the drums would pierce through the chaos and sounds of battle, signaling commanders’ orders across long distances. In the camp, the fife and drum also signaled to soldiers when to wake up, collect provisions, assemble, march, and more.

Located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the Verona Steel Castings Company produced ashtrays, doorstops, and other goods including bookends.
