Vintage Syroco Wood Eagle with Federal Shield Wall Plaque, Mid 20th Century
Presented is a vintage Federal eagle wall plaque from Syroco Wood. This mid 20th century eagle supports a shield in its talons as the head looks to its left. A curling, waving ribbon flows behind its tail feathers. It is accented with a white head, yellow beak, and a red, white, and blue shield. With carved detailed feathers and a dramatic expression, this stylized eagle is an interesting work of art.
The Syracuse Ornamental Company (later shortened to Syroco Wood) was founded by Adolph Holstein, in 1890. The company was based in Syracuse, New York, and initially specialized in producing decorative woodwork for local homes and businesses. However, the financial constraints of the Great Depression ushered in a new era for the company and it pivoted to more affordable, mass-produced home items. The company specialized in new building materials, like molded wood pulp that resembled wooden hand-carvings. Each piece reflected a commitment to craftsmanship, but in a more accessible form.
The eagle motif in décor and folk art has widely been used throughout much of US history and is brimming with meaning. Eagles in decorative and folk art became wildly popular and could be found on ordinary household items from tabletop items, to embroidery, to furniture. This deeply-rooted symbol is still relevant today and is closely tied to the idea of strength, freedom, and wisdom.
