Vintage William Howard Taft and James Sherman Campaign Glass Paperweight, 1908
Presented is a vintage William H. Taft and James S. Sherman presidential campaign glass paperweight from 1908. The clear glass paperweight has a flower form, with a printed and enameled political jugate at the bottom. Two oval black and white portraits of Taft and Sherman are surrounded by an illustrated laurel wreath border, the candidates named in the scrolling banners below. The portraits are surmounted by a spreadwing eagle with the U.S. shield and sword, as well as blue and white American flag bunting. The glass paperweight is printed with its makermark, "Graeser Manufacturing Co., Pittsburgh, PA,” at the bottom.
The Republican party nominated William Howard Taft as their presidential candidate in 1908. Taft was the Secretary of War and Theodore Roosevelt's choice to replace him in the White House. With enthusiastic backing and campaigning from Roosevelt, Taft and James Sherman, his running mate, easily defeated the Democratic candidate, William Jennings Bryan.
This paperweight was made by the Graeser Manufacturing Company, based in Pittsburgh. In 1892, Albert A. Graeser patented a process for making advertising paperweights in which he sealed an image to the underside of a rectangular glass blank using an enamel-like glaze.
