You Only Live Twice was the last James Bond novel to be published during Ian Fleming’s lifetime. It is the eleventh novel and twelfth book in the Bond series. You Only Live Twice is the final chapter in what is known as the "Blofeld Trilogy," after Thunderball and On Her Majesty's Secret Service. Fleming wrote the book in January and February 1963 at his Jamaican estate Goldeneye. The original manuscript was 170 pages long and the book is the least revised of all Fleming's novels.
The story was serialized in the Daily Express newspaper starting on March 2, 1964 and the April, May, and June 1964 issues of Playboy magazine. It was also adapted for comic strip format in the Daily Express. The novel was adapted by screenwriter Roald Dahl and the film was released in 1967, starring Sean Connery as James Bond. The film was produced by Albert R. Broccoli and Harry Saltzman and was made by EON Productions.
Ian Fleming (1908–1964) was an intelligence officer, journalist, and creator of the fictional British Secret Service agent James Bond. Beginning in 1939, he served as a liaison between the Navy and the other secret services, where he was privy to the highest levels of intelligence and became known for his creativity in planning operations, work that inspired his later novels.
After the war, Fleming became a journalist and in 1953 published his first James Bond novel, Casino Royale. It was a success, and Fleming wrote a new book each year until his untimely death in 1964.
